Whether you are shopping for a BJD-lover for the holidays, or buying something for yourself, there are great items available for the collector in every price range! As anyone who has been collecting for a while knows, many doll companies offer special events with free shipping, free items, and discounts around this time.  We have been keeping track and posting them on the Company Sales Events page. Of course, at this point, the chances of delivery for Christmas are slim-to-none, but even if the items can’t arrive in time, a photo may be an acceptable stand-in especially if the present is a long-desired doll!

This year, so many retailers were offering special deals that we also added a Retail Sales Events page to the site. Many retailer who carry dolls have some in-stock and ready for shipping. While there is less choice of dolls available, the shipping may be considerably less, especially if the doll is being shipped domestically or with a free-shipping offer.

Bergen Fields

Bergen has lots of wonderful outfits and just finished two frothy fashions for SD BJD girls who might need something for all the Holiday Parties. About the first, Shinny,  Bergen wrote, “I can’t help but sing “Her name was Lola, she was a show girl”  But she is in pink instead of yellow!  Layers of pink and lavender tulle make up the skirt, high in the front and long in the back.  The top is pink and hot/lavender sequins.  Her hat has vintage feathers.  The top closes with grommets to adjust to any bust size.” About her second costume, Electric Fuchsia she said, ” The top and top layer of skirt are made of a slightly fuzzy metallic fabric, the underskirt and shawl are a sheer metallic. The shawl is a large triangle with a matching long fringe, you can do a lot with this shawl. There is an attached slip of tulle with a ruffle of sparkle. The Batty Hair Piece has a hair clip on the back. The corset top closes up the back with grommets for easy adjustment to any bust size and the skirt closes with velcro. DollWhy

At the request of collectors, DollWhy has created a special item. “Our Christmas item is Limited Winter White Headphones! We’ve been asked several times about when we will release white headphones. Now it’s time to fulfill our customers’s request.”  The white headphone are very limited in quantity and are available only during the holiday season.

Some other Christmas items are a Santa Hat (SD/MSD/YOSD) and a  Mr. Reindeer set for MSD which consists of a white tee, leather vest, bell collar, and reindeer antler headband. Items from the new theme Fairy Tales will be released over the next few weeks. Finally, more beautiful OOAK jewelry pieces by Hoshino have been added to the site. DollWhy produces doll items in a prices for every pocketbook.

Nancie at Nankatts is always making new things, and she has a slew of outfits in red and green, a warm cloak, and cuddly pajamas.  Her outfits are usually for 1/4 size dolls and 1/6 size dolls. She will also happily custom-make outfits too. Her sets run from $20-35 and consist of multiple pieces, as NanKatts loves to create a complete look with each outfit!

Fidelia Items at Jpop Dolls

Jpopdolls has been selling lots of items specially for the tiny Charles’ Creature Cabinet doll Fidelia Firefly Faerie.  Muse Star, a new artist, has become quite adept at making tiny fashions for the doll.  To keep Fidelia warm for the winter, she just recently created a fur-edged cape and boots, and for indoor use, pairs of cute teddy bear or reindeer slippers. Connie Lowe of Marbled Halls also covered a dresser with mirror in silver foil for fashionable fireflies to primp before the holiday parties.

Marsh Pants started a Holiday sale for virtual vouchers.  ”All Virtual Vouchers over $10 purchased as a gift will include a second free Voucher for the purchaser as a thank you gift from me.   It’s the gift that keeps on giving!   This promotion goes through the end of the year.   The second promotion will launch on this coming Sunday, December 13.   It’s a 12 Days of Christmas Sale – each day there will be a 24 hour sale on a particular item.   Sale items will be announced at or around midinight on each day of the sale and will be available at the sale specifications until midnight on the following night, when they will be replaced by the next day’s offering.   I hope it will generate a lot of excitement.  This sale will continue until Christmas day. While they won’t make it in time to wrap as a gift this season, a pre-order of a tiny doll or little resin creature from the Cabinet of Wonders series is something that would be cherished by any tiny doll-lover. Charles’ Creature Cabinet artist Charles Stephan also created three special creatures for the season, the Rasta Twin Brownies Bailey Rose and Marley, and a new version of IF (Imaginary Friend) with jointed limbs. Virginia has two online doll businesses;  her BJD fashion and accessory site Raw-Kiss, and her repaint and face-up site Forever Virginia. Her background in graphic arts has enabled her to develop special eyes and glasses for dolls. There are also a variety of fur wigs available, especially  tiny ones, in various colors and textures on her site. Periodically a series of OOAK outfits for dolls with a unifying theme are released.

Virginia started as a repainter of fashion dolls. “It was the July 2004 issue of Haute Doll Magazine that introduced me to the art of doll repainting. I’ve always loved dolls and fantasy, and I was completely enchanted by the repainted Tonner dolls that looked like beautiful fairies with a modern edge.” She practiced and eventually became quite adept at painting Tonners, Barbies and Obitsus. Though she was aware of BJDs and was attracted to their looks and articlulation, Virginia was hesitant about the price of the dolls. Eventually she had to get one. Her first doll was a Dollzone Megi. According to Virginia ” it was all downhill from there!”  Megi was replaced by other dolls, as Virginia tends to buy, customize, and eventually sell most of her collection. She admits “I have a pretty high turn-over with my own collection. I enjoy the whole process of searching, buying and customizing. Sometimes they stay around longer than others, but nothing (in my collection) is totally ’safe’.”

According to Virginia, “I’ve always found ways to use my computer skills to enhance my dolls. One example is my glasses, a product I developed for the fashion dolls which carried over to BJDs equally well. The glasses are printed acetate plastic sheets that you cut out and bend to fit your doll.” Her computer also allows her to create unusual doll eyes with the use of acrylic eye kits. “I currently have 38 unique styles available in even sizes 8mm-20mm available for $12 each. I also offer a custom eye option for $20 and can create pretty much create any style the customer can dream up. I really enjoy giving people that thing they’ve been imagining and searching for.”

Raw-Kiss also offers an assortment of fur wigs, especially for the tiniest of BJDs. “I started the wigs for Puki, especially short fur styles because they seemed to be in short supply. I’ve also done sizes up to 7/8. I recently did a wig collection called “Fright-Furs!” that had a halloween style – the “wolfy” wigs for LittleFee were particularly popular.” Virginia’s daughter also periodically has some wigs for sale in the shop. “My daughter (almost 13) is completely in love with BJDs too, and I taught her how to sew Puki wigs so she could save for a second doll (she got a Puki for Christmas last year).”

Raw-Kiss was launched last summer not only to sell eyes and glasses, but to showcase Virginia’s newest project, doll fashions. ” I’m not a professional seamstress but as with face painting, my skill is growing in this area. I am now working on my fifth collection which will be called “Apple Days” and is inspired by one of my regular customer’s request for a Holly Hobbie outfit. I don’t tie myself down to one style (such as punk or lolita) but like to explore many fashions – giving them my own ‘raw kiss’ touches and introducing unexpected fabric and color combinations. I have a list of about 25 different collections I’d like to make so you can expect many more to come!”

Raw-Kiss will always have room for whatever new product Virginia can come up with. “I guess you could say I’m a very curious tinkerer and that makes me a great doll fanatic. I’m constantly imagining more fantastic characters and exploring new techniques – my studio is a craft cave of wonders for sure! And now that my daughter has caught the BJD bug, I have someone close at hand to share my latest “brilliant ideas” and “dolly experiments” with.”

Our new Sunday article is on one of the most talented clothing designers in the doll world, Chesca. She designs outfits for AnotherSpace2 and for various doll companies. She also designs fashions for her  line of dolls at her own doll company Slinky Neko.

We are currently working on a special month for October.  It will concentrate on smaller BJDs. It will be our second themed month. The first themed month, elf and fairy month, was so popular, it will be brought back next year.

Froggy Duds is a family business.  The Etsy store combines the work of sisters Vicki and Brenda, and Vicki’s daughter Leah. Vicki, who is a seamstress, re-awakened her love for dolls when she was searching for a gift for a grandchild.  She became interested in various types of dolls and began to sew for them.  Soon she began to receive requests from friends and acquaintances for custom doll clothing. At the urging of a friend. Vicki eventually bought her first BJD, an Orientdoll Jeong Cheong and soon began to create BJD clothing.

After Vicki began to collect BJDs, Leah became interested in the dolls as well. She planned to buy only one. Her first doll was an Orientdoll So Ye. Several dolls later, Leah was looking for ways to create something for dolls as well. With her training in graphic design and printing, she started making miniature books.  Soon Leah wanted to do even more, and she began crocheting clothing and learning to create custom face ups.

Brenda was eventually brought into the hobby, even though she “held out a bit longer (thinking both Vicki and Leah were a bit crazy), before really ‘wanting’ to be involved.” Brenda, who is a talented knitter, was asked by Vicki to make knitted items for her. Brenda deveoped a knack for making small items and eventually became more involved in creating doll fashions and in collecting as well. (her first doll was a vinyl BJD, Goodreau Whisper).

FroggyDuds was Leah’s idea. She “was traveling with her family late one night when (it) occurred to her that the three could have a lot of fun pooling their talents into one place…over the next few days, FroggyDuds was born.”  The group decided that  Etsy was the perfect venue to display their work, and they have been working together ever since.  The fact that each of them lives in a different state has never been a problem.  All items ordered at Froggy Duds are shipped for free, and the person who made each item ordered ships it out.

Everyone at FroggyDuds has worked on commissions. Vicki has made everything from a pair of jeans to complete outfits. Brenda has done several commissions for tops and other knitted items. Leah has done faceup commissions and crocheted items. Kim Lasher of Kimberly Lasher Originals has commissioned work on many occasions. For the Lasher dolls, Brenda has made sweater and hat sets, Leah has done a face-ups and made dresses and hats, and Vicki has created complete dress outfits, jeans, hoodies, and onesie outfits for her ooak babies. For anyone interested in requesting face-ups, Leah can be contacted through the Etsy store, but she also can be reached through her Flickr site leahlilly’s photostream, where examples of her work can be seen.

FroggyDuds has a special charity section in the store. According to the group, “Brenda wanted to increase her own personal charitable giving. She thought about just donating a portion of her earnings on her own and unknown. But she noticed another seller on Etsy that listed donations that had been made to various charities with proceeds of sales from the store. She started thinking that people like to know they are contributing in some way…and so the Charity section was born.”

The group likes the Etsy environment. “It’s a friendly community, and things seem to move fairly well there. They have reasonable fees as well.” FroggyDuds customers are welcome to post their dolls wearing their new items on the flickr site Show Me Your FroggyDuds. The Froggduds women agree that, ”The feeling of sisterhood and family unity have made each project even more rewarding. Each project has its own way of coming to life whether it be a moment of personal inspiration or a vision passed from a customer for a commissioned item.”

Miniature artist Jennifer Novack of ‘Violet Pie’ grew up in the Midwest.  Her parents were artists; her mother a dancer and singer, and her father an artist and Jazz musician.  Initially Jennifer went into dancing, and taught ballet for a few years before re-entering school to obtain a bachelor’s degree in painting.  ” I met a guy, another artist, who wanted more than anything to go to graduate school in New York. So we did. I lived there for five years, graduated with a Master’s degree in painting, worked as an artist’s assistant, painted murals, then eventually returned to Wisconsin.” Jennifer still  paints murals but not as often.  “I still paint murals to make a living, but I don’t enjoy it much anymore, because I’ve found something I like much better… dolls! My interest in dolls surfaced when I began seeing both Blythe and Ball Jointed Dolls on the internet. I was hooked!”

Jennifer discovered BJDs in 2007 and now has a small collection. “As of now I have 2 Dollstown girls:  Seolas 7 and 13… an Elfdoll Yumi, Secretdoll Yoi, Latidoll Miel, Narin Dandelion, Planetdoll Riz and Mini Riz… and a DT Yeondu ‘Floating head’.”  She decided to make accessories for her dolls and found a Japanese pattern book of tiny animals. She wanted to make some little creatures for her dolls because, she states “I am a huge animal lover.” In searching for ways to make her own designs, Jennifer found a needle felting kit on eBay. She said, “I fell in love with the technique. It just became a more natural way to create these little creatures that inhabit my imagination… and they continue to evolve.” She describes her work as “a passion,  and almost a livelihood. I sell out of my etsy shop, but also take a lot of custom orders from doll collectors. I make a LOT of custom orders! I always have a list of customers waiting for me. I love getting new ideas from people, love trying new things and new challenges.”

“I now like combining mohair fur with the felting, and have lots of new plans and ideas. I’m also starting to get into some shows around the US. She lists her recent shows. “I was in a show last year in Australia at a gallery called Ruban Rat. This year I’m going to be in a show at Bear and Bird Gallery called “Stitch Wars”, with plush creations inspired by Star Wars. And there is a show in Maryland called “Mortal Plush”, with creations showing human emotions, and then Plush You is doing a show in August which I have been accepted for.  I am also now working on patterns for Simplicity Patterns. Hopefully they will debut in the catalog next spring.”

Jennifer likes making different sizes of creatures. “As far as sizes of dolls and my toys, I make all sizes, and it’s surprising how big and small both seem to work with most dolls. Sometimes I like a big toy with a doll, and sometimes a tiny one is cute too.” She adds  “Now, after all that serious art schooling, and art history, I’ve become a toy maker instead. I’m happier than ever because I feel I’ve found my voice as an artist.”

We asked Nancie of NanKatts  if she would be interested in adding a few fairy-related items to her shop to go with the May Elf & Fairy Month theme at BJDcollectasy. In response, Nancie created  not a few, but a whole section of fairy costumes for a Pipos Baha Anthro, Creedy,Goodreau, and Bobobie girls. She topped it all off with a specially made stuffed cat fairy. This is much the way Nancie approaches any doll fashion request, brimming with ideas and enthusiasm.

Doll collecting and sewing are intertwined with Nancie, and like many who do both, she started at an early age. Her doll outfits were assembled on a treadle machine. She also sewed in the 4-H club.  Nancie moved away from dolls as she grew up, married, and had 4 children, two girls and two boys. She eventually began making doll clothes again for her girl’s Barbie dolls, and later sold some doll clothing at church craft fairs. She worked primarily as a teacher for special education students.

Nancie eventually started collecting dolls, first antique, then fashion dolls. “ I purchased several Gene and Tonner dolls and enjoyed making clothes for them and selling them on Ebay. After a while, the BJDs started becoming more popular than the others, and I ventured into that wonderful world.” Nancie sews for all sizes of dolls, but she especially enjoys making tiny doll clothing. “My absolute favorite to sew for is Ani the little 10″ Dollzone girl.”  Nancie has a complete section devoted to the DZ tiny size called ‘Ani’s Closet’. She has also made outfits specially designed to fit Creedy dolls like Laughter.

While Nancie has outfits pictured on her site, she is more than happy to custom design clothing for her customers. She makes not just the basic clothing but creates multi-piece sets. “Most of my sewing is of ensembles which include a dress, slip, panties, jewelry, sometimes purses, hats etc. I really like to see complete outfits so that the kids can go out in public and look well dressed. The accessories are the ‘frosting on the cake’ so to speak.”

The name ‘Nankatts’ relates to Nancie’s background in breeding, showing and judging cats. “I have owned or been owned by cats since I was about four years old. This love took me to great heights in breeding Persians, then on to some Exotic Shorthairs and finally in about 1984 Scottish Folds.”   At one time, she sewed cat-themed items. “I had been operating under the name of Nankatts for several years where I sold many crafty items with cat themes at Cat Shows that I attended. This is the name that I continued to use for my doll fashions.” After travelling to cat shows around the world as a judge and breeder, she has retired from cat breeding. “I am no longer breeding my cats and the remaining ones are not allowed to be anywhere near my sewing area. What a disaster they could create! They would truly love to get tangled up in threads, and materials, but that is strictly forbidden.”

Nancie wanted an online site, but was unsure how to build one. “I tried to set up my own website a few years ago and was having a terrible time doing it, when my dear friend and wonderful Artist, Karen Kay from Texas sent me a Christmas present of a complete website.”  Nancie’s website is colorful and sparkly with  lots of pictures of dolls and also one of her award-winning Best Cat in 2006  Silver Nuggettes Mc Prinz Whiten – a blue eyed white longhair folded boy.

Nancie will custom make outfits for any size doll.  She states “Should you need something special for your kids, please contact me as I love to do commissions!”  She sends picture to her clients for approval before shipping. At our request, she put together a full ensemble with shirt, t shirts, shorts, hat, socks, and a jacket for our KazeKidz Pip at a very affordable price.  She suggested different items she could make, and asked if she could add a hat for free as she thought it would be a fun challenge.
