Marsh Pants simply makes the best-fitting pants your doll will ever wear. She creates each pair from fabrics chosen by the customer. Marsh has an amazing selection of fabric choices. In addition to trousers, Marshpants also creates shorts and skirts. Prices are based on the size of the doll. She offers clothing for Tinies (up to 33 cm), Minis (35 – 47 cm), Fashion dolls (40 cm), Large dolls (55 – 60 cm), XL dolls (61-70 cm), and XXL dolls (71cm and above, also includes Iplehouse EID),

Marsh started collecting BJDs after first collecting vintage Barbies and then Takara Jenny and friends. On a trip to Japan, Marsh discovered Volks dolls. Her first doll was an MSD F-02 bought used. She soon discovered that she couldn’t find the outfits she wanted for 1/4 size dolls. Marsh said “I found a serious shortage of cool clothes for mini-sized dolls, so I began sewing for them myself.” She posted her dolls sporting her hand-made clothing on the doll forum Den of Angels. According to Marsh, “As my collection grew and I continued to grow as a seamstress, I was approached by other collectors to buy garments I created. Soon I had a sales thread on the Den of Angels forum.” Eventually friends persuaded her to open a website to sell her items and the Marsh Pants online store was opened. The site was designed by a friend to her specifications. The store recently celebrated its second year anniversary.

Marsh Pants offers only a few types of clothing including trousers, shorts, and skirts, but they are made to fit to perfection. “I can pretty much fit any doll body. Between my collection and the collections of my friends, I have dozens of models in hand, which really helps to get the best fit…Occasionally when a new doll type comes out, I’ll contact someone who owns that doll and ask if she’d be willing to model and critique a new test pattern in exchange for free pants when the pattern is perfect. That’s been wonderfully helpful.” The clothing is made without extraneous detail to provide a smooth fit. Marsh explains why in her website FAQ, “Unlike human bodies, which are soft and squishable, resin bodies don’t give. So a zipper, button, snap, or even a pocket is going to stick up and look bulky under shirts or other garments. I decided early on that I wanted a clean, sexy look to the trousers and skirts I design. Also, one of the most exciting things about BJDs is the creative aspect. Most of my customers like dressing up their rezin!kidz trous with belts, chains and embellishments of their own. So I give them a great fitting trou in a fantastic fabric they can dress up to make their very own.”

Each item made by Marsh is customized for each doll, and the selection of materials available ranges from stonewashed denims to faux ostrich skin. Some of the materials can be tricky to work with. Marsh states,”By far, the most challenging is stretch velvet, particularly the higher napped velvets. The fabric shifts, even when pinned. Shiny PVCs can be a nightmare because the fabric will stick to itself, the sewing machine, needle and even to my hands on a humid day. Some brocades fray very badly, or won’t take a press. I’ve learned a number of little tricks to make sewing any difficult fabric less of a struggle.” Since all of the clothing is customized to the doll, Marsh can create related garments from jodhpurs to lederhosen. “Since I custom cut every pair these days, I get a lot of special requests. I really love getting owner input. I’ve done some terrifically fun projects, including jodhpurs, fringed pants for a Bambicrony, parti-colored trousers, lederhosen in Puki size, Victorian/Steampunk skirts with lace tiers, and for one customer I produced a leather tank and trousers for a Trinity from The Matrix costume. Now I make that shirt in several sizes. Recently I’ve had a lot of requests for breeches to fit the various hoofed dolls that are being produced.” Her FAQ states “I cut every trouser or skirt to order. That means if you want a special cut or length, I can provide that…No matter what you ask for, I can usually ship your trousers in 2-3 days.”

Marsh Pants offers specials and sales at different times of the year. “My major sale of the year is for the website anniversary, but every year I do something special for some of the holidays. Halloween is my favorite holiday, so I always do a promotion with an exclusive fabric that will only be available for that week. Right now I’m hunting for just the perfect fabric for this year’s Halloween promo!”
